Ira's Chicken Pox Day #3

Not that it is reflected at all in the following photos... but this third day was the hardest on her. We did lots of cuddling and scooby doo watching.

To try and cheer her up a bit, I snuck into the kitchen and made this faerie house for her....this was all trial and error. i cut the two openings, glued in a cardboard "floor" for the upper level. I sanded the plastic a little, decoupaged construction paper to it... didnt like the look, rubbed it in glue and poured sand on it.... then appplied the acorn caps and ... Read Morethen made the roof.

it was super fast craft wise- maybe an hour total? im thinking of making a whole village. but I dont have that many plastic containers.

She loved it. It has so far been: a faerie house, a littlest pet shops house, and an ewok village home.

Ira's Chicken Pox Day #2

Ira woke up earlier than usual.... so I asked,"How are you feeling?" her response, ""GREAT!"
So then I said, "You mean the chicken pox aren't hurting you?!?" Well, that was a better question I suppose... because she said, "oh, like they are burning, and itchy and hurt really really bad."

and that sums up her personality better than any other sentence Ive ever heard. She responds to the world so fresh, so ready. She loves life and just LIVES to experience things... its almost as if it didnt occur to her to not feel great even though she is in pain. Like the pain is part of the chicken pox, but other than the chicken pox, she is GREAT!

I love her.

I found it really sad, when she accidently scratched a pox and looked at me sobbing... she said, "why is this happening??? why does it HURT so bad?"

I guess after 28 years of life, you kind of forget the first run in with PAIN. This is her first real hurt. Bumps and bruises were not common for her.

So to off set the itching, we put her hands to work- cutting and gluing.

There was stock making....soon to become soup.

Making tea for dabbing on the pox...
Netttles, Rose Hips, Chamomile, Comfrey.

Simmering oat meal bath...
full stock pot with
2cups oats
nettles
comfrey
chamomile

resulting pulp- put into a cheesecloth for use in bath.

bottled up topical solution (left) and bath concentrate (right)
I actually made about 8 bottles of bath solution and canned them. One jar per bath worked well for us. I used two once and she was pretty grossed out by the thickness.

Ira's Chicken Pox Day #1

We woke up thinking that it was never going to happen... the chicken pox, that is. We had been gravitating towards home most days to prevent passing it on to anyone who really didnt want it... but we were going a little nutzo and the park group was meeting. We were having breakfast and decided to go to park... then as we are finishing up, Ira says to me, "mama- is this a pimple? or a chicken pop?" She calls them chicken pops andI think its hilarious.

It was, a chicken pox. Behind her ear. If she wasnt so self aware, I wouldnt have discovered her pox for the entire day. They were small and all hidden.

So, park was out. We decorated a little outside for halloween instead.

we LOVE the library!

but lately- we have grabbed duds..... not that are necessarily duds as books, but just not grabbing ira or liv's attention..... this last trip yielded two really good ones-

Mother Earth and Her Children: A Quilted Fairy Tale

The Giant Cabbage: An Alaska Folktale

we grabbed a fresh batch yesterday- hopefully we had more inspired hands!

First Completed Knitting Project

of the 2009 fall season!

ira wasnt so into modelling it~ she was "busy"....

liv was plenty happy to model- she is kind of addicted to pictures... if she even hears the camera power up- she comes running into the room yelling, 'CHEESE'

making applesauce....

We went to the market on sunday and they had Organic Gala Apples for 77cents/pound!
we bought a bunch and made applesauce....and applejuice....yum.

the girls and I used the counter top apple corer, peeler, slicer- dumped them into large pot.
simmer with just about an inch of water until at desired consistency....
Ira spooned the mushy apples into the food processor...
two quick spins....
serious goodness... no spices, no added sugar.... nothing but delicious apples.

after the applesauce was done, I made some juice- apple (also using the peelings and cores from the applesauce!), celery and ginger- my very favourite combination.

then all this leftover pulp went to feed my compost!
